By the year 2040 the region will have doubled in size and there will be 430,000 jobs in Durham (about the current population of Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax combined).

Bright idea in hand

Future work opportunities could range from construction to harvesting medical isotopes according to the experts.

Some of the job sectors that have an opportunity to flourish in the Durham Region over the next 20 years include:

– Sustainable Energy
– Agriculture and Local Food
– Health and Biosciences
– Next-Generation Autos
– Advanced Manufacturing
– Multimodal Transportation Logistics
– Construction
– Technology

Heather McMillan, Executive Director of the Durham Workforce Authority states, “I think Durham has worked really hard to diversify itself. For me, the next 10, 15 to 20 years will be really exciting to see where we go.”

There are several industries putting down roots in Durham. They are expected to bring a future of work that is almost impossible to fully envision now.
