We are dedicated to assisting the unemployed and underemployed reach their employment goals by providing support and service without judgment.


In supporting our clients, we encounter the impact of overt and systemic racism. It persists consciously and unconsciously in attitudes, stereotypes, policies and programs that exclude and further oppress people in marginalized communities.


Confronting and fighting to eliminate racism and all forms of discrimination and oppression requires individual and corporate commitments and actions.


The Durham Region Unemployed Help Centre embraces, supports, and continually strives to reflect the rich diversity of our community. We are committed to demonstrating leadership in an inclusive workforce that creates a welcoming, safe space for our clients, where professional working relationships are built on respect.

Days of Commemoration

Many significant days of commemoration came on the heels of daily protests against the violence and racism experienced by Black and Indigenous people, and members of other racialized and marginalized communities, in Canada, in the United States, and around the world. 



June 19 is Juneteenth commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

June 20 is World Refugee Day recognizing the contributions of refugees who are forced to rebuild their lives outside of their homeland.

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrating the rich cultural heritage of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada.


These days of commemoration were an opportunity to reflect on the strength and resilience of people who have been oppressed by overt and systemic racism for generations, as well as to acknowledge and lament the persistent weight of racism on these same communities.


The Durham Region Unemployed Help Centre acknowledges the ongoing work of numerous partner organizations that increase our awareness of different communities’ unique strengths and contributions, who are leaders in advocating for fairness and equality, and who champion diversity and inclusion.


We extend our commitment to work collaboratively with these organizations, recognizing that it will take the full strength of our collective efforts to bring about meaningful change for oppressed and marginalized communities.

Bursary for Bilingualism


Being bilingual has its rewards!


The Government of Canada recently established a yearly bursary program that provides an opportunity for English-speaking college and university students to perfect their bilingualism with a $3,000 bursary while studying in their field of interest.


The program aims to encourage young English-speaking students to pursue their postsecondary studies in French, allowing a greater number of English-speaking Canadians to become bilingual.

You could receive $3,000 to take your postsecondary program in French.

In May World Education Services Canada (WES Canada) launched the #ImmigrantsWork campaign with immigrant employment councils across Canada to support rebuilding Canadian businesses with a focus on immigrant integration.



The twitter chat engaged over 100 contributors and reached more than 30,000 users.


Following are some of the key themes of the campaign:


All industries in Canada have benefited from the contributions of immigrant talent. 


Immigrants are business owners, contributing to economic growth and job creation.


Immigration will continue to be an important pillar of Canada’s strategic growth post-COVID. 


Diversity still matters and is an asset with bottom-line impact.


Challenges persist in the inclusion of immigrants in the Canadian workforce.

Business Resilience


As businesses prepare to reopen or revamp their operations due COVID-19, there are numerous issues and challenges to consider.



The Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s Canadian Business Resilience Network is providing a toolkit to help business owners and senior managers re-establish operations while ensuring health and safety of operators, staff, customers and the general public is at the forefront. Click for information.


Durham Region Transit Update


After suspending fares on March 23rd to support the physical distancing measures required as a part of the COVID-19 response, Durham Region Transit is set to resume fare collection on July 2.



Along with fare collection, front door boarding and rear door exiting will ensure one-way passenger flow and eliminate crowding at the front doors.

Canada's Roots


This month many Canadians celebrate Canada Day.


This time presents a great opportunity to learn about Indigenous People of Canada. “It’s important to include Indigenous Peoples and their histories, contributions and their current realities in celebrations,” says Commissioner Brian Eyolfson from the Couchiching First Nation in Ontario. Shelter at Camp Samac


To support physical distancing measures and help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Durham Region has worked with community partners to temporarily open the In/Out of The Crisis (IOTC) program at Camp Samac.



Scouts Canada collaborated with the Region to permit the use of Camp Samac as a temporary location to provide shelter for unsheltered residents of Durham during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Small Business, Big Impact


Small businesses across Canada have faced unprecedented challenges in 2020, some have been harder hit than during the 2008 downturn.



Recently, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Ontario Chamber Network released a report to address some of the challenges facing SMEs and to highlight those who have successfully adapted to a new business environment.

COVID-19 and Disability

COVID-19 has had an impact on everyone. Because people with disabilities have had many extra expenses to deal with, the government announced additional support including a one-time $600 payment for those who already receive the Disability Tax Credit.

Last month was Pride Month!



The annual celebration looked a little different this year. In Toronto, people were encouraged to watch a livestream event and raise their flags from their own windows and balconies. Read the CTV article.

Career in Skilled Trades




According to a Statistics Canada Report released in Fall 2019, it is increasingly difficult for Canadians to make a good living.


Statistics indicate that more and more Canadian workers are holding low-paying jobs.


In fact: “between 1998 and 2018, the proportion of employees earning minimum wage grew from 5.2% to 10.4%, with most of that growth occurring between 2017 and 2018”.


Offering careers that combine high demand and high pay, Chief Executive Officer of Skills Canada, Shaun Torson, believes that the skilled trades present at least part of the solution.


Although the perception may be that skilled tradespeople are not paid well, many positions pay good wages, skilled trades people are in demand and often earn a good income.
