The pandemic has ignited an unprecedented upheaval in Canada’s Labour Market. In March and April of 2020, Canada lost more than three million jobs.

That is more job losses in a shorter period of time than the total job losses over the three previous downturns combined. In 2008–2009, employment losses were at half a million over an eight month period.

The May 2020 Labour Force Survey suggests that the worst may be behind but the road to recovery will be long. The impact of the crisis will unfold in the months and years ahead.

Businesses are busy putting plans and policies in place for a post-COVID labour market. There are several lessons that can be learned from the past to ensure that the recovery is inclusive. According to an article via CareerWise, there are three steps that should be considered:

Step 1: Find out who Is most affected

Step 2: Gear recovery efforts to those affected

Step 3: Support employment transition with skills
