Equal Pay Day – April 12, 2022

A day dedicated to raising awareness.

Equal Pay Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness of the gender pay gap , and it reflects how far into the year the average woman must work to earn what the average man earned the entire previous year1.

The 2022 Equal Pay Day in Canada is April 12 which implies that to earn what the average man earns in 12 months, on average, women must work 15+ months.

According to Ontario Equal Pay Coalition, the average gender pay gap for all women in Ontario is 32%, with this gap widening as different social identities overlap.

The impact of the gender pay gap is a lifetime of pay inequality between women and men with women disproportionately retiring into financial insufficiency and poverty; this alongside other gendered stressors take a toll on women2 .

The Ontario Equal Pay Coalition shares on how to close the gender pay gap and is calling on the government to take action to support economic justice for women through its 5 demands including, raising the minimum wage to a living wage, mandating paid sick days for workers, implementing the Pay Transparency Act amongst others.
