Position Summary:
The Community Liaison will connect regularly with the existing Associate Partners of the Durham Welcome Centres to (re) engage partners; identify and recruit potential new Welcome Centre partners that meet the existing and emerging needs of newcomers, immigrants and refugees; (re) build relationships with cultural and newcomer organizations and leverage opportunities to connect with communities that may not be aware of Durham Welcome Centre services; leverage partners’ and community organizations’ communication channels to reach more newcomers, immigrants and refugees and identify opportunities to support and/or coordinate collaborative community outreach events.

While the Community Liaison will support the work of both Durham Welcome Centres – Ajax and Pickering, the person filling this role will report to the Manager of the Pickering Welcome Centre.

Major Duties:
• Assist in outreach by the Durham Welcome Centres to ensure local community partners, especially ethno-specific cultural and newcomer organizations are aware of the services available at the Welcome Centre and the eligibility requirements.
• Work with the Durham Centre Managers to identify community needs, other community resources and cultural organizations and facilitate collaborative activities that reflect the “one stop shop” model of the Welcome Centres.
• Support the Centre Managers with identifying, and/or strengthening working relationships with community partners, community agencies, etc.
• Coordinate and maintain a schedule of outreach activities to ensure the Welcome Centres’ presence at relevant local community events.
• Attend and assist with special promotional activities at one or both related to the individual Welcome Centres (e.g., Citizenship Ceremonies, Seasonal Celebrations, special workshops)
• Support the Centre Managers with the scheduling and coordination of on- and off-site information sessions, outreach booths, with community agencies
• Review and refer media requests as per the Welcome Centre Marketing Policy and Procedures
• Respond to requests for printed collateral, information and tours.
• Ensure consistency of Welcome Centre messaging and branding as well as adherence to Welcome Centre System Branding and Marketing as documented in the Welcome Centre Marketing Policy and Procedures.
• The Community Liaison will work with the Centre Managers and a marketing consultant to develop and deliver an Awareness Campaign that brings more awareness to the location and services of the Durham Welcome Centres.
• Other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and/or training of:
• Knowledge of Newcomer Services and Programs and non-profit community services
• Good understanding about the specific needs of newcomers and immigrants as they integrate into Canadian society

• Excellent communication skills, including writing, proofreading skills and public speaking
• Strong interpersonal skills – listening, building rapport, supportive, etc.
• Excellent management and organizational skills; deadline oriented with good attention to detail
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point).

Ability to:
• Multitask, work well under pressure and adapt to change.
• Ability to work independently, with little supervision

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
• A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in English, journalism, marketing, public relations or communications or related field
• Creative, innovative and able to offer suggestions for continuous improvement
• A team player.
• Willingness to travel throughout the Durham Region for meetings (mileage/travel expenses reimbursed)
• Multilingualism would be considered an asset for this position
• All candidates must have a valid Driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
• Flexibility in workplace days/hours could be required to fulfil job requirements

Working Conditions:
• Consistent computer work in an open office environment.
• Multiple requests, deadlines, and interruptions.
• Little exposure to hazards.
