Did you know that free income tax clinics are available in Durham for people whose total family income is less than $30,000/year for an individual or $40,000/year for two people (combined income)?
If you have children, take advantage of the child tax benefit. Although there is still a long way to go, to overcome childhood poverty the tax benefit has had a positive impact on many families living below the poverty line.
The income-tested Canada Child Benefit was introduced in 2016. It replaced a system of tax credits and the universal child care benefit.
Compared to 2015, Statistics Canada figures showed 278,000 fewer children living below the poverty line in 2017, over the first full year of the benefit. Read the GlobalNews article.
